Bowling Green Detective Honored with U.S. Attorney General’s Award for Work on Cold Case

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — A decades-old case that has weighed heavily on the Bowling Green community was resolved, leading to national recognition for a Bowling Green Police Department detective.

The case of Morgan Violi, a 7-year-old child who was abducted while playing outside, transported across state lines and murdered, remained open for nearly 30 years. Over that time, investigators pursued hundreds of leads in an effort to bring justice to Morgan and her family.

Advancements in forensic technology, particularly DNA analysis, eventually led investigators to identify a potential suspect who had been incarcerated for more than three decades. Detective David Grimsley was assigned to a joint task force with the FBI to further investigate the lead.

Through extensive investigative work, the team established a timeframe during which the suspect, Robert Froberg, had escaped custody, providing the opportunity for him to commit the crime. Investigators conducted numerous interviews and developed a strategic plan to approach the suspect.

Detective Grimsley and an FBI agent traveled to Montgomery, Ala., where they conducted a nine-hour interview with Froberg. The interview resulted in a full confession to the abduction and murder of Morgan Violi.

The resolution of the case provided long-awaited answers, and the investigation has also received national recognition for the dedication and collaboration demonstrated by the investigative team.

In recognition of their work, the team was awarded the U.S. Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service, the highest honor presented by the U.S. Department of Justice. Detective Grimsley received the award in late March.

Grimsley traveled to Washington, D.C., where he received the honor.

Grimsley’s "work reflects an unwavering commitment to justice and the highest standards of this profession,” BGPD Chief Michael Delaney said. “His efforts bring great credit to the department and the Bowling Green community.”
