Fairview Cemetery Clean-up

Have you ever wondered what the rules are at Fairview Cemetery?  Maybe you have not, unless you have loved ones buried there or you have purchased graves for you and your family members.  Some of the more common rules are often not followed and we want to explain why we have them in place.

One of the main rules that are frequently not followed, is the planting of unapproved landscaping.  Often times, people come into the cemetery and plant items for their loved one.  But we ask that before you plant, please contact the Cemetery Administration Office to make sure what you have planned is approved landscaping.  We have over 30,000 burial plots on 109 acres that we maintain on a weekly basis.  This includes mowing, weed eating, weed killing and general maintenance.

Another rule at Fairview Cemetery is to keep all items off the ground during mowing and mulching season.  We do not want mowers and weed eaters to accidentally destroy something that might be of sentimental value to the family member that placed it there.  Items may not be placed on the ground from March 1st through October 31st which is mowing/mulching season.  However, exceptions are granted for Easter, Mother’s/Father’s Day, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day and birthday of the deceased.  Many families also place beautiful artificial flower arrangements at their loved ones grave.  Unfortunately, many times these arrangements come up missing.  There are many reasons for this; the wind might blow them off during a storm or they were not placed tightly enough on the headstone or in the vases.  These items, if found, are held approximately one week next to the Cemetery Administration Office back patio.  If an ID tag can be affixed to the arrangement with the name as it appears on the monument, Cemetery Staff will do their best to see the arrangement is placed back to the correct monument.  But unfortunately, the main reason for these arrangements to disappear is theft; so we ask that you do not place anything sentimental or valuable at a grave.

Fairview Cemetery Staff will be conducting their Annual Cleanup beginning March 1st and continuing through mowing/mulching season.  We advertise this event several weeks before in the newspaper, through PSA’s, at www.bgky.org, on social media and we post signs in all 4 cemeteries which include:  Fairview Cemetery 1 and 2, Mount Moriah Cemetery and Pioneer Cemetery.  Cleanup will include decorations, flowers, statuary, plaques, and other items that are on the ground; this includes items that will get in the way of mowers, weed eaters and grave maintenance.  Cemetery Staff will also be removing any holiday decorations which include any Christmas decorations, as well as, any worn or faded flowers and trinkets.

If you have any questions regarding our Annual Cleanup please call our office at 270-393-3607, Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00am and 4:00pm and we will be happy to answer any of your questions.
