Disabling TLS 1.0

What is happening?

On May 2 2016, the City of Bowling Green will disable the TLS 1.0 encryption protocol for anyone accessing our municipal website. Visitors using an unsupported browser or one that has disabled the required encryption protocols will be unable to access our website.

Why is this occurring?

We are disabling the TLS 1.0 encryption protocol in order to comply with industry-wide best practices and maintain high security standards within our organization. This change will also allow us to better protect citizen and vendor data.

Will I be affected?

To quickly test your browser compatibility, you can visit our test site, which will let you know if your browser has TLS 1.0 disabled. If you see a green page displaying "Success" you are already comptabile and should not be affected by this change. If you see a red page that shows "Failure", you will need to upgrade your browser or adjust it's settings.

We have included a compatibility guide below:

Enabling TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 in Internet Explorer

We recommend that everyone who uses Internet Explorer to upgrade to version 11. As of January 12, 2016, Internet Explorer 11 is the only version that is still supported by Microsoft.

However, users running Windows 7 (or newer) may continue to use Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10 by making simple changes to their Internet Explorer browser settings.

  1. On the Internet Explorer main menu, select Tools > Internet Options.
  2. In the Internet Options box, select the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Security category, uncheck Use SSL 3.0 and check Use TLS 1.0, Use TLS 1.1, and Use TLS 1.2 (if available).
  4. Click OK
  5. Exit and restart Internet Explorer.
Windows Vista and older operating systems, such as Windows XP, are not compatible with TLS 1.1 or higher encryption and will not work with this fix. If a user is unable to upgrade their operating system, they will need to use a different web browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
