CITY SEEKING APPLICANTS FOR FIRST "50 OVER FIFTY" CITIZEN'S ACADEMY

BOWLING GREEN, KY- With the sponsorship of Kentucky AARP and
support by Bowling Green Coalition of Active Neighborhoods (BGCAN), the
City of Bowling Green Neighborhood Services Division is looking for
applicants age 50 and over to participate in its very first Citizen's
Academy, a weeklong "inside look" at City government programs and
services.  Also billed as an "exploration of livable communities," the
Academy will take place daily Monday, October 22 through Friday, October
26.

Provided at no cost to participants, the Academy will include a "behind
the scenes" look at the City's budget, departments, equipment and form
of government.  It will feature tours of the City Hall campus, Public
Works Operations, Police and Fire departments, and Parks & Recreation,
along with an overview of community resources for people over 50 and
ways to stay engaged and involved in civic life.  Daily lunches,
snacks, all materials, and a graduation lunch with City officials is
included with registration.

The deadline for applications is October 15, and space is expected to
fill up fast.  An application, daily schedule and more information can
be downloaded at http://www.bgky.org/neighborhoods/resources.php
or by calling Neighborhood Services at 393-3674.  The Citizen's Academy is
designed to complement other citizen programs such as the Citizen's Police
Academy, Citizen's Fire Academy, and Neighborhood University
offerings.  The WKU Center for Gerontology and WKU ALIVE Center for
Community Partnerships are also contributing technical assistance and
content to the Academy.
