Traffic Calming

The City of Bowling Green's Residential Traffic Calming Program focuses on reducing the average speed on local residential streets well as minimizing the total amount of vehicular traffic through them. The program also encourages citizen involvement in neighborhood traffic management activities. Successful traffic calming programs include planning, , as well as local authority support and participation.

This program is intended for local streets and limited minor collector streets that run through residential neighborhoods. Emergency vehicle access within and through neighborhoods must be carefully considered in the evaluation of traffic management practices.

Given the increasing desire for traffic calming in residential neighborhoods, the program outlines steps to be taken for each traffic calming project. A project will be considered and a traffic study conducted only if the citizen completes a Residential Traffic Calming Program Project Application Form which can be obtained through the City Central office. Once a speed study has been completed, city staff will use the results to see if it qualifies by a set of criteria established in the Traffic Calming Guidelines. If a street qualifies for traffic calming, it will be prioritized and ranked. Several factors are considered in the prioritization process. The procedures for receiving, responding to, and managing citizens' requests for residential traffic calming can be found in the Traffic Management Manual. (Link to PDF of TC guidelines)
