Given Bowling Green's karst topography, environmental concerns are a major focus of the City. Environmental concerns related to storm water have become an important issue throughout the country. The origin of these efforts began with the Clean Water Act of 1972. This Act primarily addressed point-source discharges. However, recent federal regulations have been developed to address non-point sources of pollution. Today, as point sources of pollution have been effectively addressed, the leading cause of storm water pollution originates from non-point sources. On 10 March 2003, The City of Bowling Green fell under the Phase II portion of this regulation for storm water. As Bowling Green relies on the usage of drywells and sinkholes for storm water conveyance, our compliance with the Phase II regulation is critical.
