City Government - History of Bowling Green

History

Old Fire StationThe area that is now Bowling Green was first explored by “long hunters” in 1775. This land was completely untouched by mankind and was covered with thick forests, bubbling rivers and streams, rolling hills and rocky terrain. A few years later, pioneers came to settle the land and began the process of civilizing this part of Kentucky.

The Revolutionary War slowed the expansion process of the settlers. However in 1792, Kentucky became the 15th state to enter the new United States. This helped bring more settlers to the area to carve out civilization in the untamed wilderness.

In 1797, Warren County was established. Thirty acres were donated by Robert and George Moore for the creation of a town within Warren County. In 1798 the county commissioners decided to call the new town Bowling Green. It was designated as the county seat in 1809 and was incorporated in 1812.

Bowling Green has continually grown throughout the decades. Businesses thrive, the population steadily grows, and more and more people are discovering the wonderful heritage of this city that started out as vast, untouched wilderness.
