Martin Luther King Holiday
It is the goal of the community to remember those who have inspired and dedicated their life to service such as Martin Luther King Jr. Each year there is a program that is devoted to his memory and the astounding work that he has done. “I won’t have the fine and luxurious things to leave behind. But I just want to leave a committed life behind.”
Unity Day “Journey to Unity”
Discrimination has been defined as the unequal treatment of equals discrimination is expressed in overt behavior, while prejudice is expressed in attitude. During the last thirty years efforts to combat racial discrimination have figured prominently in our history, the civil rights movement of 1950’s and 1960’s won the passage of important legislation; and federal agencies, yet there is still a great deal that needs to be done. In our efforts, the BGHRC hosts a yearly Unity celebration to bring Unity in the community.
Women’s History Month
Each year the Bowling Green Human Rights Commission hosts the “Women of Achievement Awards” which honors women for their contributions in the following:
- Community Service
- Women’s First
- Women of Distinction
- Youth Achievement.
Why Do We Celebrate Women’s History?
Multicultural women’s history tells the story of our nations past from an extended perspective. It does not rewrite history; but it does make very different judgment about what is important.
Women’s History approaches the past with a wide-angle lens, taking in a much wider vision of what was going on in any given time period. In addition to the government and military in the public sphere, we also look at the private sphere, at the ongoing life situations of people from all walks of life, people just like ourselves and our own families.
Women’s History also provides a wealth of new role models for today’s young people and for adults as well. The courageous women of the past who have dared to forge new roads have helped to create a world where future possibilities are limitless.
