Independence Place

The City acquired several parcels of land in the 300 and 500 blocks of West Main Avenue with Community Development Block Grant funds.   The purpose of the acquisition was for clearance of blighting conditions and subsequent redevelopment of residential housing.

The City is partnering with Housing Assistance and Development Services, Inc., (HANDS) to construct a total of 24 units at the two sites.  Their application for Low Income Housing Tax Credits has been approved and they are ready to move forward with the project.  At least 80 percent of the units will be available for persons age 55 or older, at least 50 percent of the units will be set aside for special needs clientele, and 100 percent of the units must be initially occupied by persons of low or moderate income.

The proposed project will especially target military veterans and their widows and will build a link with service providers to support their special needs.

This site is located within the bounds of the KRS 99 St. Joseph School Area Revitalization Plan and the proposed development complies with the future land use map for that area.  The City will retain an easement on a portion of the parcel at 833 Barry Street for future neighborhood stormwater drainage needs.
