Why are my City and County Property Tax Bills such different amounts?

The City Treasurer collects Property Taxes for both the City and for the Bowling Green Independent School System, if the property is located in the City School district. The County Sheriff collects Property Taxes for Warren County, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and for the Warren County School System, if the property is located in the County School district.

Where do I go to pay my car taxes?

Automobile property taxes are paid at the Warren County Clerk?s Motor Vehicle Registration office located at the Warren County Courthouse, 429 E 10th St., 842-1535.

Why do I have to pay Property Taxes to both the City and the County?

If your property is inside the City limits, it will receive services from the City, the most visible of which are police and fire protection. However, the property will still receive services from Warren County, such as the operation of the jail.

Can I make one check out for both my City and County Property Tax bills?

No, they must be paid separately. The City bill is mailed to the City Treasurer, PO Box 430, Bowling Green, KY 42102-0430. The County bill is mailed to the Warren County Sheriff, PO Box 807, Bowling Green, KY 42102-0807.

My mortgage company is supposed to pay my Property Taxes. Why did I receive the City Property Tax bill?

Mortgage companies must request bills each year. Then, a code is placed on the property record in order to have the bill information automatically sent to the mortgage company. However, the property owner will receive the City bill with a notation of which mortgage company was sent the information. In doing this, property owners will have a record for their income taxes and can directly notify any new mortgage company if their loan was refinanced during the year and the wrong mortgage company requested their bill.

I sold my property during the year and I still received a City Property Tax bill. What do I do?

Please send the bill to the new owner if you know them or contact the City Treasurer?s office at (270) 393-3000 and give us as much information as you can regarding the new owner. The City tries to keep up with property transactions in order to mail the bill to the new owner. However, transactions that occur after our cut off date are not recorded until the following year.

Why do I have to pay a late fee if I never get a Property Tax bill?

State Statutes place the burden to pay the property taxes on the property owner on or before the due date regardless of whether they receive a bill or not. The City runs several notices in the newspaper, on television, and on our web site to let people know when we mail bills and when they are due. If you own property and do not receive a bill by November 1 each year, please contact The City Treasurer at (270) 393-3000 and we will send another notice to you.

When are Property Taxes due?

All bills are due in full on or before December 31 of each year.

Do I get a discount if I pay my City Property Taxes early?

The City does not offer a discount for paying early.

What action does the City take if Property Tax Bills remain unpaid?

Several reminder notices are sent to property owners before anything else happens. Then, the City publishes current year unpaid Property Tax Bills in the newspaper once a year. We also list current year unpaid bills each month on our website. To view this list, click here: Click Here. If real estate bills remain unpaid, a foreclosure action is initiated in Warren Circuit Court and the property is then sold by the Master Commissioner.

What if I have more questions on Property Taxes?

You can Click Here or you can contact the City Treasurer?s Office at (270) 393-3000.

Taxes - Property

If you own property in the City limits, you should receive a City tax bill, as well as a Warren County tax bill.  Bills are mailed each year in the fall.  As a reminder, under State law it is the property owner’s responsibility to make sure that the property tax bill is paid.
