Mayor's National Dollar Wise Campaign
Financial Education For America Free Credit ReportsCredit reports are vital to your financial wealth! Beginning June 1, 2005, residents of southern states—including Kentucky—can request a “free credit report from each of the three major consuming reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
A recent amendment to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies to provide a free copy of credit reports upon request once every year.
Getting a free annual credit report is simple. All 3 major providers have set up a central website and toll-free number and mailing address. You can click on www.annualcreditreport.com or call (877) 322-8228 to order a report. Some personal information will be required to request a report, and you may be asked to verify certain financial information that the companies have collected. Online requests for credit reports are available immediately. Reports ordered by telephone are mailed to consumers within 15 days.
You are warned NOT to respond to any emails claiming to offer free reports or claiming to be a message from the free reporting companies. These are likely scams and consumers are encouraged to forward the email to spam@uce.gov. Beware—the tv ad for free credit reports at www.freecreditreport.com is NOT the free credit report. From this website, you must enter a credit card number and will be charged for a service!
Getting your free credit report allows you to review your credit report and to catch inaccurate information sooner (incorrect addresses, someone else’s debt and payments, etc). People often apply for loans and then find out their credit score is low or debt ratio too high because of incorrect information on their credit reports.
