Employee Excellence Awards Program

The City of Bowling Green has recognized outstanding employees for the second year in a row with the Employee Excellence Awards Program. This program recognizes and rewards its employees for excellence in service to the citizens of Bowling Green. Through this program, City of Bowling Green employees are able to nominate co-workers to receive one of seven, $1,000 awards for excellence in service.

This year, the following employees were chosen to be honored:

Fire TrucksDonald Brod | Fire
Donald has attended or holds over 55 certifications related to fire, ems, and rescue training. Many of these trainings he has done on his own time. He teaches what he learns in these classes to fire employees so they are better prepared for situations they come across.

Michael Carter | Parks & Recreation
Michael developed a therapeutic class to meet the needs of students that suffer the same type of limited movement that Michael experiences from disability. Michael meets with students on his own time and even provides instruction to a few students who cannot make it to class. Michael checks on students who have not participated in a while and has also ministered to some who may need a helping hand or comforting word. Michael is a part time preacher and very active in his church.

Steve Milam | IT
Steve took the lead in rebuilding the Mt. Zion Church in Richardsville that was destroyed by fire. Due to his leadership, the church was completed in time for them to have their first service on Easter Sunday.

Mike Pillow | Public Works
Mike has assisted in snow and ice removal, tree and brush removal, and general upkeep with city street signs. Mike has done this on his own time before. When Mike is off work, he devotes much of his time as a baseball and basketball coach and has done so for many years.

Gary Preston | Fire
Gary is very involved in the restoration of an old city fire truck that will be used to educate the public about the history of the BGFD. Gary also supervised the removal of several fixtures, cabinets, counters, and other items from houses that were scheduled to be demolished. Gary donated these items to Habitat for Humanity for use. Gary volunteers for mission trips, church functions, and does side jobs for widow women for which he doesn’t charge.

Barry Raley | Police
Barry is the standard by which other detectives are compared. Due to his outstanding work ethic and untiring effort, Barry solved several high priority cases during the last year, leading to the arrest of several individuals who were committing crimes, and thus improving the quality of life for the citizens of Bowling Green. Barry teaches the character counts program for newly hired officers and demonstrates the 6 pillars of character counts in his everyday life. Barry is also a pastor at his church and volunteers much of his time to its members.

Joan Snyder | Public Works
Joan assisted one of our employees who was suffering from a recent illness. Joan coordinated communication between the employee’s family, friends, co-workers, and management. Joan also made sure the employee’s children were taken care.

All nominations were anonymous and self-nominations were not considered. Nominations were reviewed by a selection committee which was appointed and consisted of one representative from each department.
