Senior Management Initiatives

EXCEL Program

Your City at Work - Employee Excellence Program
Your City at Work
Employee Excellence Program

The City of Bowling Green recognizes outstanding employees through the Employee Excellence award program, or EXCEL. This program recognizes and rewards City employees for excellence in service to the citizens of Bowling Green. City employees are able to nominate co-workers to receive $1,000 awards for excellence in service. Five to 10 employees have been recognized each year since 2007.

Nominees are not told who nominated them, and self-nominations are not considered. Nominations are reviewed by a selection committee which represents each of the departmental employee committees. The selection committee reviews the nominations and makes its recommendations for awards, which are presented annually at a Board of Commissioners' meeting.

Student Solutions

Student Solutions is a youth empowerment program that brings students together to help develop solutions to real City problems. Each high school in the Bowling Green and Warren County districts are invited to select a group of six to 10 students to work as a team while attempting to solve a specific City problem.

Workforce Diversity

Workplace Diversity

The City’s high performance group, called PRO TEAM for several years, chartered an employee committee to examine diversity in the City’s workforce. The committee represented different City departments and developed several recommendations.

One result was the “Many Faces, Many Talents, One Purpose” campaign, with the tag line “The Perfect Job is Closer than You Think”. The program was credited with improving both minority applicant and hire rates during its first year. The campaign (poster and video) won the 2006 Professional Marketing Association’s Markee Award for best direct mail piece.
